Block One -- Establish Your Story Line 1. Describe your protagonist (occupational, emotional, and situational.) annis halloran, 24, has been living alone for a year, recently quit job at farmers market, friendless, no living blood relatives, depressed, lonely, has overwhelming feelings of despair, dumped by her former fiance over a year ago, has never had another relationship, feels she has no purpose of being.
2. What is the main conflict your protagonist faces? she is physically and mentally trapped.
3. Identify the conflict catalyst -- what makes it affect your protagonist? What does your protagonist decide to do now? annis at first believes that the other "patients" are much "sicker" than she is, and she tries to leave, thinking that she isn't sick enough to be there. instead, she finds that she is trapped at the facility for an indeterminate amount of time. she is forced to ally herself with william in an attempt to escape.
Block Two -- Supporting Story Elements, Crisis #1 1. Briefly describe your supporting characters. william blake- byronic hero type. fond of classic literature and pretense. writer for a goth magazine in new york who feigned mental illness in order to track down a neofolk musician who disappeared into the gauntlets five years ago. monsalvat allegretti- former belly dancer and cabaret singer who has been instructed to keep an eye on annis. goodbye johnny- cannibal hobo; also neofolk musician in question. almost totally batshit insane. destined to be killed (offstage) at the costume ball.
2. What is/are the subplots of your story? - annis becomes obsessed with tennyson. she is convinced that 'the lady of shallot' is an allegory for her life and will predict her future. - annis is in love with william, which frightens her. - william is searching for jack stump, aka goodbye johnny. jack stump supposedly has survival skills, and he thinks jack will be able to get them out of there. he hopes the article that he writes will propel him into the world of real journalism.
3. Identify crisis #1 (escalation of the main conflict, or how does it get worse?) after the disease scare, annis attempts to escape and becomes lost in the woods at night.
Block Three -- Conflict Response/Subplot Weaving #1 1. How does your protagnist react to crisis #1? she decides to lay down and die and freeze to death.
2. Which of your supporting characters reacts to crisis #1, and how? william, out walking one of the guard dogs, finds her and tells her that if she's really given up, he's not going to help her. he convinces her to come back because they're having turkey for dinner, which only furthers her existential crisis. he also alludes to letting her write for the magazine once they get out.
3. Which of your subplots comes into play now, and how? annis is spurred on to look for jack stump.
Block Four -- Conflict Escalation #2/Conflict Response 1. Identify crisis #2 (second escalation of main conflict, or how does it change/get worse?) annis catches monsalvat in her room, wearing her clothing. she chases her around the house until she becomes hopelessly lost. she runs into mr. ian woon, who brings her back to a familiar room, but tells her that he's been sleeping with william, along the way.
2. How does your protagonist react to crisis #2? until she meets mr. ian woon, she repeats the prayer alex taught her over and over again, which causes her to fall into an awful mental state as she becomes more frustrated.
3. Which of your supporting characters react to crisis #2, and how? monsalvat claims to have no idea what annis is talking about. william claims to have never met mr. ian woon, but he is very curious as to why annis is so upset over ian's allegations.
Block Five -- Present the subplot(s) catalyst(s)/obstacle(s) 1. Describe how the subplot(s) escalate. - annis discovers (somehow) that everyone who is at the gauntlets was lured there (somehow), including jack stump, who was only recently admitted, contrary to what everyone believes (that he entered the facility five years ago.) - annis and william have some sort of frank sexual discussion, by way of "the lady of shallot".
2. How does the subplot(s) escalation affect your protagonist in relation to the supporting characters? - annis and william stop being snarky to one another - william decides that it's not so bad there after all. - they go on a search for the most recently accepted members.
